Queensland is the largest exporter of seaborne coal in the world
With over 30 billion tonnes of identified resources of black coal in the state, the coal industry is a major contributor to Queensland’s economy. Queensland is the largest exporter of seaborne coal in the world. In the 06/07 financial year, almost 235 million tonnes of coal was mined in Queensland, with 154.5 million tonnes of that being exported overseas.
The most significant uses of coal are in electricity generation, steel production, cement manufacturing and other industrial processes, and as a liquid fuel. Almost 70% of the world’s steel production is based on coal. Coal plays a vital role in electricity generation worldwide—coal provides 25% of global primary energy needs and generates 40% of the world’s electricity.
