BICC Officially OpenedAnna Bligh

The Blackwater International Coal centre was officially opened on Sunday 31st August by the Hon Anna Bligh, Premier of Queensland.

Over a thousand visitors joined the Premier and other Government representatives in Queensland’s coal capital to get a glimpse of the one-of-a kind facility.

The public took full advantage of the fun filled open day including live entertainment, rides, and a movie screening of “Get Smart” in the Centre’s cinema.

Joined by the State Minister for Mines and Energy, Geoff Wilson, and the Federal Member for Flynn, Chris Trevor, the Premier congratulated all levels of Government, industry, and community that made the Centre possible.

Ms Bligh said the BICC was an outstanding facility, up there with the international best in terms of tourism operations. “It is one of the best educational facilities that I’ve ever seen, and is as good as any museum that you will see in our capital cities,” said Ms Bligh.

The Premier marked the opening of the BICC with the signing of a Sustainable Resource
Communities Partnership Agreement, a $100 million funding package to strengthen resource industry-based communities.

The BICC will open seven days a week from 9am-5pm. One movie will be screened each week from Wednesday through to Sunday.

Bottle Tree Re-locationbottle tree

As part of our commitment to the environment, the Blackwater International Coal Centre has partnered with BMA Blackwater to relocate an iconic bottle tree to the Centre grounds.

It took three months of planning to move this five tonne, 8.5 metre bottle tree from the BMA Blackwater mining lease to the BICC as part of the final development stages of our $9 million interpretive facility. The tree was marked to be destroyed to make way for future mining operations, but was salvaged and transported via low loader in an event symbolic of environmental preservation.

There were a number of reasons why the bottle tree was chosen for the relocation, including its adaptation qualities and overall beauty. The swollen trunk and sculptural branching of the bottle tree are rarely seen on any specimen apart from this type and the Boab tree of northern Western Australia. Bottle trees are common in the Blackwater area, and have been included in the logos of mining companies in the region.

It was exciting to see the magnificent bottle tree transported to the BICC, and was a true example of how the BICC’s sponsors, including BMA Blackwater, LCR Lindores, and Marshalls, are committed to the environment and the community.

Mine Site Tours

If you still want more after visiting the interpretive centre, be sure not to miss a guided tour to see a real working coal mine first hand. Experience the scale of the operations and the massive equipment used in the coal mining industry. Contact the Centre for details.

Bottle Tree Re-locationbottle tree

As part of our commitment to the environment, BMA Blackwater will partner with BICC to re-locate a number of large bottle trees to the Centre grounds. The trees were marked to be destroyed as they were in the path of a new haul road at the mine. Bottle trees are common in the Blackwater area, and have been included in the logos of mining companies in the area.

Dragline boom to become part of Centredragline

The Blackwater International Coal Centre has been successful in securing a 60m section of a giant dragline boom to be relocated to form part of a walkway into the Centre. When the boom is installed, visitors will walk underneath the structure as they enter the building, and in doing so realise the massive size of equipment used in the coal mining industry. The boom will be just one more attraction that makes the Blackwater International Coal Centre unique in the world.
