Mining and the Community

Worldwide the coal industry employs over 7 million people, 90% in developing countries. The industry also generates income and employment in other industries that are dependent on coal mining.

In Australia, coal mines are often in remote or rural areas, and mining companies are often the major employer in a community. As such, the mining companies are often called upon to provide facilities for the surrounding community, and are committed to supporting the communities in which they operate. Several townships in the Bowen Basin were built by mining companies specifically to house their workers.

Most major companies have community relations departments, with personnel focussing on keeping neighbours and others in the area informed of developments and keeping an open channel of communication. Mining companies contribute large amounts as donations to community groups, with an emphasis on youth and health programs.
