The Blackwater International Coal Centre arose from a vision instigated by the Duaringa Shire Council in 2003 which was supported and developed by major coal producers BMA Blackwater mine and Wesfarmers Curragh Coal.
The concept was to provide a sophisticated and enduring platform for the showcasing of the mighty Australian Coal Industry and the associated industries that underpin the state and federal economies. Key to the proposal was the need to build a self sustaining tourism and educational facility that would not only become an iconic landmark for visitors to Central Queensland but would also serve as an accessible and valuable space that improved quality of life for local residents.
As well as sponsors who provided financial and in-kind support, many other local companies and members of the community have also provided much appreciated support to the concept and the facility.
The development of the site is being guided by a Board of Directors. The Blackwater International Coal Centre offers the public a unique view into the operations, past and present, of Australia’s coal mining industry. The centre is the first of its kind internationally, portrays a unique level of government-industry collaboration, and will set world renowned standards in excellence.
The Centre provides high quality amenities for the local community and deliver significant employment and economic benefits. Incorporating an education and community centre, exhibition space, a theatre cinema and café, it is expected the Blackwater International Coal Centre will become a social and cultural hub for the people of the town and surrounding area.
